Feral pigs have been tearing up the ground at Alae Cemetery and some parks on Hawaii Island.

The ground is uneven and hard to walk across for people visiting certain gravesites.

“We’re noticing more damage from feral pigs than ever before,” said Maurice Messina, director of the county’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We’re contracting out to have pigs caught and removed, but it’s a slow process.”

Pigs also have caused extensive damage in Kamehameha Park in Kohala, as well as near the Hilo Municipal Golf Course, although there has not been any damage to the greens, he said.

“Until we’re able to fence off areas like Alae Cemetery, the problem will remain,” Messina said. “It costs a lot of money to fence off an area that big. We’re dealing with this on a daily basis now and trying to stay on top of it.”
