Dr. Robert Alan “Bob” Fox, 78, of Hilo died Oct. 1 at home. Born in Portland, Ore., and raised in New York City, he was a professor emeritus of physics and longtime chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department at University of Hawaii at Hilo, founding deputy director of the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Studies, member of Rotary Club of Hilo, the Hilo Yacht Club, National Education Association, American Educational Research Association and the Wine Connection, elected member of the Hawaii State Board of Education (1992-96), board member of numerous community organizations, and author of two books and numerous professional publications.
