The Volcano Wood Show Exhibition is currently on display and continues through this week. The show is open 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. today through Sunday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. The exhibit is also featured online at www.volcanoartcenter.org.

This event will feature the various wood artists in the community who produce individual one-of-a-kind works using indigenous Hawaiian and exotic woods. The exhibition held in the Dietrich Varez Hall at Hale Ho‘omana at VAC’s Niaulani Campus features furniture, sculptures and wood art by both professional and amateur island artisans. Funds generated from the show will contribute to the development of Volcano Art Center’s “Art Van Go” project, a mobile classroom and woodshop.

During the show, the wood artists will be on hand to share their work and stories.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors and artists showcasing the many talents within our community from chopsticks to furniture,” states Volcano Art Center CEO, Mike Nelson.

Being the first woodshow featured at Niaulani, VAC hopes the momentum will grow in future years. This year’s event was juried by VAC’s own gallery manager, Emily C. Weiss and by Codie M. King, director at Waialoa Center in Hilo. Award winners include Marcus Castaing, Michael Mortara and Paul Schurch, with honorable mentions to John Mydock, Nick Shema and Dan Alexander, in the student category.

In addition to the juried show, the exhibition features a unique collection of architectural works by Kenneth Lahti.
