The state has released nearly $3.4 million for capital improvement projects in Honokaa and Honomu.
Gov. David Ige announced Monday that he would release $3,392,388 in funding for a trio of projects to improve schools in Honokaa and develop agricultural lots in Honomu.
Of the three projects, the Honomu project will receive the lion’s share of the funding, with $2.6 million going toward construction of substistence agricultural lots.
The remaining $750,000 will be split for projects to remove architectural barriers at Honokaa Elementary School and Honokaa Intermediate and High School. The project at Honokaa Elementary will receive $300,000, while the remainder of the funds will go to Honokaa Intermediate and High School.
The improvements at the schools are being made to ensure that the facilities better comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“I’d like to thank Governor Ige for releasing funding to finance design improvements for our Honokaa Schools to help them become compliant with current ADA standards,” said Sen. Lorraine R. Inouye, who represents North Hilo and Hamakua, in a statement. “I also want to express my gratitude to (Hawaiian Homes Commission) Chair (William) Aila and the Department of Hawaiian Homelands for continuing the development of homestead lands for our Kanaka Maoli in Honoma.”
