Lloyd Roswell “Kona” Berman, 82, of Kailua-Kona died April 13 at Hospice of Kona’s Nakamaru Hale. Born in Kealakekua, he was a salesman for Kona Gas Co., bellman at the former Kona Surf Hotel, security officer at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, member of Kona Athletics Softball Club, Christ Church Episcopal Church and U.S. Navy veteran. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Ulalia Kaai Berman of Kailua-Kona; sons, Michael (Lisa) Berman and Analu Berman, all of Kailua-Kona and Lono Ikuwa of Kalaoa, Kona; daughter, Hoolai(Jack) Berman of Kailua-Kona; several brothers and sisters; numerous grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Else Mary De Mello, 93, of Captain Cook died April 2 at Florie’s Care Home. Born in Seattle, she was a retired distribution coordinator for Sears and Roebuck, member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and church volunteer. Services held. Survived by sons, James De Mello of Hilo, John (Roberta) De Mello Jr. of Captain Cook, Michael De Mello and Adrian (Larond) De Mello of Hilo; daughter, Ramah Peery of Hawaii; grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. John O. Matias, 76, of Keaau died April 19 at home. Born in Honolulu, he owned JOM’s Janitorial Service. Private services held. Randy Mathew Mattos, 68, of Hilo died April 19. Born in Hilo, he was a singer, hunter and fisherman. Visitation 9-9:30 a.m. Thursday (May 6) at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Margaret “Maggie” Spinney Penrose, 89, of Kailua-Kona died March 22 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center in Hilo. Born in Kailua-Kona, she was a telephone operator at the former Kona Surf Hotel and member of American Business Women’s Association, South Kona Aloha Lioness Club, Kona Crime Prevention Committee, Business and Professional Women’s Club, Soroptimists International Club of Kona and ILWU Local 142. Private memorial services at a later date.
