Charges filed in fatal Puna shooting

Police have filed numerous charges against the suspect in a fatal shooting Monday in upper Puna.

Daris Paul Pacheco, 32, of Volcano has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary of a dwelling during an emergency period, first-degree terroristic threatening, promotion of a dangerous drug, marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, and seven other firearms offenses.

Pacheco remains in police custody in lieu of $411,000 bail pending his initial court appearance, Thursday afternoon in Hilo District Court.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a residence on Nau Nani Road in Aloha Estates subdivision after receiving a report of a shooting. The victim, 59-year-old Jay Allen Freeman, was found dead in his yard.

Pacheco, a neighbor, was arrested at his nearby home after the department’s SWAT unit responded and evacuated nearby residents. No additional shots were fired by police or Pacheco.
