As expected, Chaminade came out angry as a hornet’s nest but still lost in four sets to the UH-Hilo volleyball team, which hit better in the last three games to win its fifth straight.
The Vulcans defeated the Silverswords 20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 on Saturday night at UHH Gym to go undefeated on the day after earlier sweeping Hawaii Pacific in a PacWest Hawaii pod match.
Taira Kaawaloa had a stellar match: 14 kills on 42 swings, .262 hitting clip, and 11 digs for the Vulcans (7-1), who hit .178 to finish 4-0 during the weekend.
Bria Beale also added 14 kills but hit just .083 on 48 attempts and 13 digs. Alexandra Parisian had nine kills, and Tani Hoke produced 26 digs.
Brooklen Pe’a slammed 16 kills and hit .250 while Rachel Reedy had 13 kills and hit .184 for the Silverswords (3-5), who had good reason to feel furious before the match.
Earlier in the day, the Silverswords lost to HPU in five sets. But it was more so how they lost.
Chaminade took the first two sets, lost Game 3 25-23 and Game 4 25-22, to force a final set, which was about frustrating as it gets.
The Silverswords led 14-12, a point away from the match, but it was tied at 14-14 and again at 15-15.
Then the Sharks set their best player, Cameryn Collie, who knocked down consecutive kills to finish off the Silverswords
Collie lit up Chaminade with 23 kills and hit .314 and got a double-double with 11 digs.
Chaminade’s bad day ended with an 0-2 record and the all-time series with UHH is now tied at 12-12.
