This time-lapse sequence, released today by the USGS, shows the growth of the lava lake in Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The sequence starts on Dec. 28, 2020, about a week after the start of the eruption, and ends on March 10, 2021.
The lake rises rapidly at first but then eventually slows down as the eruption rate gradually declines. The lava lake was 725 feet (221 meters) deep as of this morning.
The S1cam webcam time-lapse sequence includes approximately one image per day and is looped six times.
