A judge on Monday declined to lower the bail or release a 35-year-old Hilo man facing felony assault and related charges for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend with a glass smoking pipe.
Hilo District Judge Bruce Larson maintained bail for Nathan Keanini Camacho at $35,100 and ordered him to return at 2 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing.
Camacho is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, plus methamphetamine possession, first-degree terroristic threatening — all Class C felonies that carry a potential five-year prison term upon conviction — and domestic abuse, a misdemeanor.
Officers on Feb. 25 responded to a report of a woman with stab wounds and lacerations at Hilo Medical Center, according to police.
Police say Camacho’s 30-year-old girlfriend reported that during an argument with Camacho, he struck her in the back of the head with a closed fist, then broke a large glass smoking pipe and stabbed her multiple times with it.
According to police, the woman also reported that Camacho threatened to shove the broken pipe down her throat.
The woman was released after being treated for injuries to her arm and ear.
Camacho remains in custody in lieu of bail at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
