‘Big Dog’ Scholarships
Four Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarships worth $1,500 apiece are available to Big Island high school seniors who ran cross-country or track during their high school careers.
To be eligible, students also must be attending a two- or four-year college and have a grade-point average of at least 2.5. Volunteer activities and community service are also important factors, as well as financial need.
Applications are available by emailing rarkin24@hotmail.com or sunrisesports foundation@gmail.com, and they must be submitted by April 11.
To be selected, student-athletes must have demonstrated not only a willingness to make the sacrifices necessary to excel in his or her running activities, but also strive toward excellence in all aspects of school and community endeavors.
Joseph was a teacher, cross-country and track coach, mentor and runner for more than 20 years before dying in 2013, but through this scholarship – awarded annually since 2006 – his legacy lives on, with the help of Richard and Virginia Alderson.
Joseph always said, “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see young people enjoying life through sports participation.”

Sunrise Athletics is holding a sponsorship drive to raise funds for the following “Pay-It-Forward” initiatives

Vuls make grade
UH-Hilo student-athletes posted an overall fall grade-point average of 3.195 while dealing with mostly online classes, pushing its cumulative GPA to 3.193. The department’s previous record high for cumulative GPAs was 3.191, set through the spring semester of 2020.
The men’s golf team, under coach Earl Tamiya, had the highest team GPA for the fall at 3.559, and it has the highest cumulative GPA for a eam at 3.580.
Every Vulcans program had a fall GPA of 3.0 or better except for baseball, which just missed at 2.977.
