Gov. David Ige announced today he’s appointed Laura Acasio of Hilo, an educator, to the state Senate District 1 seat vacated by Kai Kahele, who is now a U.S. congressman.

Acasio will be sworn in tomorrow and, as the District 1 senator, is expected to open the session, which begins Wednesday.

“I did inform her that her first duty as a member of the Hawaii State Senate will be to hold the gavel,” Senate President Ron Kouchi said.
