Ernest De Luz, 89, of Paauilo died Dec. 29 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honokaa, he owned Ernest De Luz Ranch, was a retired equipment operator for the County Public Works Department Highway Maintenance Division, and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Survived by sons, Peter De Luz Sr. and Paul (Velma) De Luz of Paauilo and Stephen (Jamie) De Luz of Ahualoa; daughter, Margaret De Luz of Oregon; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. John “Jippy” Howard Mattos, 81, of Hilo died Dec. 10. Born in Hilo, he was a retired road and construction maintenance superintendent from the County of Hawaii Public Works Department and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 8-11:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Prayer service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2 at noon. Face masks and social distancing required.
