Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Dec. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, six; South Hilo, four; Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 996 DUI arrests compared to 1,076 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.4%.

There have been 765 major accidents so far this year compared to 977 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.7%.

To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities compared to 25 fatalities for the same time period last year, a decrease of 40%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
