Police seek suspect in Papaikou shooting

Police have opened an attempted murder investigation after a reported shooting in Papaikou.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the area of the Papaikou Transfer Station on Old Mamalahoa Highway. According to reports, police contacted the two victims who said they were shot at by a male suspect who left the area in a vehicle before police arrived. One of the victims had multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

A 24-year-old male was transported by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center’s Emergency Room with life-threatening injuries. He later underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, according to police. The other victim, a 50-year-old male, was not injured.

Detectives are continuing the investigation which is classified as an attempted first-degree murder.
