Masaya Kuwahara, 99, of Hilo died Aug. 18 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Papaikou, she retired from the former S.H. Kress Store. Private services. No flowers. Survived by daughters, Lynn (Thomas) McCarthy and Claire (Craig) Shigeoka; stepdaughter, Aline Younge; sister, Mildred Takahashi; brother, George Ashida; sister-in-law, Arlene Ashida; two grandchildren, one stepgrandchild and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Kiyoko Horimoto, 100, of Papaikou died Sept. 6 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker and member of Papaikou Hongwanji Mission, Papaikou Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association and the former Tenrikyo Mishima Hilo Church. Private services. Benjamin Cristobal Beltran Jr., 80, of Keaau died Aug. 30 at home. Born in Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines, he was a retired project manager for Kajima USA Inc. and field engineer and supervisor. Michael “Mike” Makaokalani John Jr., 85, of Hilo died Sept. 2 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home.
