Police arrest 27 for DUI

During the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, nine; South Hilo, eight; Kona, seven; South Kohala, two; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 642 DUI arrests compared to 765 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.1%.

There have been 523 major accidents so far this year compared to 656 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.3%.

To date, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities compared to 14 during the same time period last year, a decrease of 7.1%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
