Police report 27 arrested for DUI

During the week of Aug. 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, seven; Puna and South Kohala, five each; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 545 DUI arrests compared to 679 during the same period last year a decrease of 19.7%.

There have been 469 major accidents so far this year compared to 583 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.6%.

To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities compared to 13 at the same time last year, a decrease of 7.7%.

An autopsy on the most recently reported fatality, 63-year-old Jane Lawrence of Laupahoehoe, found she died as a result of a medical condition and not the crash, according to police.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
