Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of June 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions and none were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, eight; Puna, three; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 390 DUI arrests compared to 524 during the same period last year a decrease of 25.6%.

There have been 366 major accidents so far this year compared to 417 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.2%.

To date, there have been nine official traffic fatalities this year compared to 10 during the same time period last year, a decrease of 10%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
