The Hawaii Fire Department HAZMAT team and Hilo International Airport’s crash rescue team responded at 7:40 a.m. Thursday to a report of a strong smell at the Hilo main post office near the airport.

According to a Fire Department statement, an individual parcel with a pungent odor was located and removed from the building to the outdoor loading dock. HAZMAT conducted sweeps of the building and found no other sources of foul odor.

After consulting with the postmaster, the package was placed in isolation in accordance with U.S. Postal Service protocol with a response team to open the package.

There were no evacuations and no injuries were reported.
