Peter “Pete” Doster, 86, a longtime resident of Hawaiian Shores in Puna, received a Quilt of Valor recently from the nonprofit foundation that honors military veterans.
Doster, a Korean War veteran, served in the New York National Guard from 1950-53 and went on to serve on active duty in Japan until he was honorably discharged in 1956. He retired in 1991 following a diverse career in the aeronautics/aerospace industry, public water works and offshore oil drilling companies. He moved to Hawaii Island with his wife, Mary Jane, in 1992 and designed and built their new home.
He perfected his woodworking skills and crafted many gifts for his friends and neighbors in the community. Doster is a life member of VFW Post 3830 in Pahoa, Disabled American Veterans and Korean War Veterans. The couple moved to Mauldin, S.C., in 2010.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation was established in Delaware in 2003 and expanded its mission to honor all veterans who served honorably in the military and are touched by war.
