Waiakea High School Career and Technical Education students excelled at the 2020 Hawaii State Career and Technical Student Organization Convention from Feb. 25-27 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu.
DECA, HOSA and Skills USA conferences are targeted, highly-focused learning experiences for students in the field of business, health, automotive and digital media industries. These conferences bring student members into the business industry while providing unique opportunities to extend classroom learning.
The Hawaii State CTSO Convention connects with professionals to engage students in learning industry-related trends and content. Waiakea High School DECA, HOSA and Skills USA students competed in various competency and performance-based events and exams in business services marketing, retail merchandising, medical terminology, nutrition, medical math, dental terminology, medical reading, biomedical laboratory science, biomedical debate, prepared speaking, automotive technician written and practical testing and digital media.

• Kacie Tagawa, Retail Merchandising, role play medallion.
• Miya Yanagisawa, Business Services Marketing, role play medallion, finalist medal.
HOSA
• Mara Hon, Medical Reading Health Science, seconnd place.
• Ella Johnson, Biomedical Laboratory Science, first place.
• Chelsea Nguyen, Medical Math Health Science, first place.
• Alexandra Kim-Lee, Madilyn-Beth Madali and Jennifer Nakano, Biomedical Debate, second place.
• Marshall Rucknagel, Nutrition, fourth place.
Skills USA
• Len Olivar, Automotive Service, sixth place and $2,500 UTI scholarship.
Ishimine, Hon, Johnson, Nguyen, Kim-Lee, Madilyn-Beth Madali, Jennifer Nakano and Rucknagel also have the opportunity to represent the state at their respective conferences in Nashville, Tenn., (DECA International Career Development Conference) and Houston (HOSA International Leadership Conference).
