During the week of April 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, three; Puna and Kona, two each; and North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 290 DUI arrests compared to 362 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.9%.

There have been 263 major accidents so far this year compared to 316 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.8%.

To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to six during the same time period last year, an increase of 33.3%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
