Police arrest 17, cite 18 for violating emergency orders

During the week of April 22-28, the fifth week of Gov. David Ige’s emergency order, police arrested 17 people and cited 18 others for violations.

The breakdown by district is as follows:

• South Hilo, 11 arrests and nine citations.

• North Kohala, two arrests.

• South Kohala, one arrest and two citations.

• Kona, one arrest and four citations.

• Puna, one arrest and one citation.

• Hamakua, one arrest.

• Ka‘u, two citations.

Four of the 17 arrests were visitors violating the 14-day mandatory self-quarantine for travelers. Three arrested were two men, ages 39 and 27, and a 24-year-old woman, all from Washington state, arrested in Hilo. The other arrest was in Kona of a 31-year-old woman from Jamaica, N.Y., who was also charged with disorderly conduct.

The others were local residents whom police say violated the emergency stay-at-home order.
