During the week of Jan. 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, seven; Puna, six; Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.
Multiple arrests on other charges stemmed from the 25 DUI arrests — five for driving without a license, four for driving without insurance and six for other related moving or regulatory offenses.
So far this year, there have been 87 DUI arrests compared to 73 during the same period last year an increase of 19.2 percent.
There were 17 major traffic collisions — defined as those where damages are $3,000 or more — during the week.
There have been 74 major collisions so far this year compared to 60 during the same period last year, an increase of 23.3 percent.
To date, there have been three traffic fatalities, compared to two for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
