Samuel Liwaimu Bannister Sr., 83, of Waimea died Nov. 26 at home. Born Waialua, Oahu, he was retired from the Department of Water Supply and a retired U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who served during the Vietnam War. Visitation 8-9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Imiola Congregational Church in Waimea. Funeral service 9-10 a.m. Burial with military honors noon at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona across from Kua Bay Access Road. Survived by children, Samuel L. Bannister Jr., Andrew T. Bannister, Carole L. Nickel and John J. Bannister of Waimea, Sina Kelau, Dale Price, Terry B. Price and Lee Price of Utah; sister, Esther Pahoa of Killeen, Texas; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Masaru “Masa” “Maru” Deguchi, 91, of Kealakekua died Dec. 13 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Kealakekua, he was a retired maintenance worker for Kona Market Place, coffee farmer, bowler and member of Daifukuji Soto Mission and Kona Fukuoka Kenjin Kai. Visitation 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Kona Daifukuji Soto Mission in Honalo. Service at 4 p.m., followed by a celebration of life in the Kona Daifukuji Soto Mission Social Hall. Survived by wife, Kelly Deguchi of Kealakekua; son, Ashley (Cheryl) Deguchi of Honolulu; daughter, Akemi (Ronald) Iwamoto of Kealakekua; sisters, Sugi Sugai of Papaikou and Michiko Enomoto of Kailua-Kona; two grandsons; nieces and nephews. Calvin Fumio Uratani, 73, of Hilo died Dec. 5 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired utility mechanic for the former Hamakua Sugar Co. and U.S. Army veteran. Private services held. Survived by son, Reece (Ka‘ala) Uratani of Hilo; brother, Herbert (Margie) Uratani of California; sisters, Lorraine Chung of Hilo and Earline (Eugene) Yokoi of Oahu; two grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
