The Hawaii State Public Library System is offering “Safe and Secure: Protect Yourself on the Internet” cyber safety awareness programs at various public libraries throughout the month of October.

The only offering on the Big Island is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Hilo Public Library.

Cybersecurity professionals will discuss malware protection, using strong passwords, Wi-Fi usage, online shopping and banking, scams, safe email habits, phishing, data backup and social media.

The free program also will include a question-and-answer session.

Teens, college students and adults are encouraged to attend.

“Having the knowledge and skills to protect our personal information and identities in the virtual world is vital in the 21st century,” said state Librarian Stacey Aldrich. “The Hawaii State Public Library System is happy to be a part of this important learning opportunity.”

Hilo Public Library is located at 300 Waianuenue Ave.
