Officers assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope protester blockade and encampment on Maunakea Access Road issued 591 traffic citations and arrested six suspects for 10 offenses on Daniel K. Inouye Highway between Sept. 26-Oct. 2, police said Thursday.
The 591 citations are categorized as follows: speeding, 291; excessive speeding (30 mph over limit or more, one; seat belt violations, 37; child restraint violations, three; illegal use of cellphone or electronic device, four; excessive windshield or window tinting, 17; driving without a license, 28; driving without insurance, 21; unsafe vehicle, 26; other moving violations, five; no license plates, 22; regulatory violations, 136.
There were no parking citations issued, police said.
The six individuals arrested were booked for the following offenses: DUI, two; excessive speeding, three; reckless driving, one; resisting order to stop, one; and contempt of court or failure to appear, three.
Since the stepped up traffic enforcement efforts began on Aug. 15, the combined total of the seven-week-long project by police is 4,092 citations issued and 43 persons arrested for 71 offenses.
Police say the effort is for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, and the stepped-up enforcement will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest, which began mid-July.
