When “GYPSY” opens Oct. 11, it will no doubt be one of the largest theatrical productions the Palace Theater in downtown Hilo has ever produced.
The largest budget.
The largest cast.
The most impressive sets, lights and costumes ever seen on the Palace stage.
Not to mention, in addition to the 15 adult cast members, it will feature 21 younger performers.
It’s one of the largest casts of young singers and dancers ever assembled for a scripted island musical.
“GYPSY” tells the story of an overly-obsessive mother who takes her two young daughters on an all-singing, all-dancing cross-country adventure in pursuit of fame and fortune on the Vaudeville circuit.
“For me, one of the greatest things about doing this show is watching the young performers interact with our older, more experienced actors,” said director Larry Reitzer.
The two leads, Jeri Gertz, who is playing Mama Rose, and Saul Rollason, who is playing Herbie, both played the same roles when the Palace did the show 15 years ago.
The talented young cast is being led by Dayva Escobar, who plays Louise, and Meili Aspen Caputo, who plays Dainty June. Dayva recently appeared in “RENT” at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Meili recently starred as Princess Jasmine in “Aladdin” for Center Stage. They are joined by Anna Braun and Olivia “Livi” Rosehill as the younger Louise and June, respectively.
Advance tickets are now available. Prices are $15 general admission, $25 side reserved and $30 center reserved.
All adult tickets will be $5 more the day of the show. Children 12 and younger are $5 in advance, $8 the day of the show.
