The Pacific &Asian Affairs Council is seeking up to eight high school students for a nine-day study tour program to the Philippines from March 14–22, 2020.
Need and merit-based scholarships are available. More than 90% of participants received financial assistance on past programs. The application deadline is Oct. 6.
Students will have an up-close look at how people in the Philippines are fighting poverty.
Participants will meet innovators and entrepreneurs whose creative ideas are improving the quality of life for many of Manila’s least privileged communities.
Students also will explore how national identities are forged by learning about cultural and historical legacies.
“This trip challenges you to take a good look at the issues in your community, to make connections to concepts internationally and locally and to think about how you can apply what you learned back home,” said a student who went on the 2019 trip.
The 2020 itinerary will include a day trip to the Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm in Bulacan to learn about innovative social enterprises that are revolutionizing business in the Philippines, exchanges and volunteering at local schools in Manila, visits to different nonprofits and community organizations working to support some of the most vulnerable populations in urban metro Manila, a briefing at the U.S. Embassy and a walking tour of the historic Intramuros district.
Public, private, charter and home-schooled students from all islands are welcome to apply.
