Enforcement near TMT protest nets 566 citations, three arrests

Police said Thursday they issued 566 traffic citations and arrested three individuals for five offenses on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Highway 200) near the site of Thirty Meter Telescope protests for the weeklong period starting Aug. 29.

The 566 citations were categorized as follows: speeding, 281; excessive speeding, one; seatbelt violations, 25; child restraint violations, four; illegal use of cellphone or electronic device, 12; illegally tinted windows or windshield, 10; driving without a license, 25; driving without insurance, 30; unsafe vehicle, 19; other moving violations, eight; no license plate, 12; regulatory violations, 137; and illegal parking, two.

The five offenses with which those arrested were charged were: DUI, two; and contempt of court, three.

The combined totals of the three-week-long enhanced traffic enforcement efforts by police on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, which began Aug. 15, are 1,806 citations issued and 19 people arrested for 34 offenses.

The stepped-up enforcement effort will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest situation to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, police said.
