Several high-profile guests visited Maunakea in support of Thirty Meter Telescope opponents over the weekend, including U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
Gabbard, currently a Democratic presidential candidate, visited with demonstrators Sunday to reiterate her support for their position.
“What’s happening here is about so much more than just a telescope,” Gabbard said. “This speaks to not only the history of disrespect and dishonoring of sacred places here in Hawaii, but this alarming trend that we see happening around the world, the danger and the consequence of what happens to us when we lose touch with our spiritual roots.”
Gabbard, a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard, has suspended her presidential campaign for two weeks to participate in a joint training exercise mission in Indonesia.
“Aquaman” star Jason Momoa also returned to Maunakea Sunday after having visited the site two weeks ago, this time joined by “Justice League” co-star Ezra Miller.
