The county Department of Environmental Management Wastewater Division will conduct sewer “smoke test” surveys from Aug. 19-23 in the Silverton Camp area in Papaikou.
County Department of Environmental Management work crews will be in the Silverton Camp area from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., weather permitting.
The surveys will assist inspectors in identifying connections where rain water (inflow) and groundwater (infiltration) might enter the sanitary sewer system.
The smoke used in the testing might be seen coming from vent stacks on houses, sewer manholes or holes in the ground. The smoke is nontoxic, nonstaining, has no odor, is white to gray in color and poses no fire hazard.
The smoke should not enter homes or businesses unless there are connections to the old sewer pipe in the area. Homeowners are advised to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to testing.
Traffic delays within the area might occur.
