Kele Kanahele of Niihau returns to the Lyman Museum in Hilo later this month to teach the authentic creation of Niihau shell jewelry.

Kanahele will present two workshops:

• 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30.

• 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

On either day, participants will learn how to make a 22-inch necklace/lei or pair of earrings, each piece combining the helikonia and pikake styles, using their choice of off-white or yellow momi shells and choice of pink, red or green kahelelani shells. Participants choose their colors when making a reservation.

Participants also can, of course, create more than one piece, as long as they sign up for specific pieces in advance.

For pricing information, contact the museum’s visitor center staff at 935-5021.

Space is limited to 24 people per session; only people who register will be permitted in the classroom.

Reservations, piece and color selections and workshop fees must be made and paid by Aug. 15.

Learn to create these treasures of Niihau from a master.

For more information, call 935-5021, ext. 101, or stop by the museum admissions desk.

The Lyman Museum is located at 276 Haili St.
