Gill-man sighted at Hilo’s Palace Theater!

Attention residents of Hilo. Be on the look out for a creature lurking in the shadows, humanoid in shape with green, scaly skin and outstretched webbed claws.

You are not safe on land.

You are not safe in the water.

The Gill-man is coming for you!

The Palace invites everyone for a scream as Friday Fright Nights, the theater’s summer monster movie series, continues at 7 p.m. Friday, July 12, with the monster classic “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

This classic 1954 creature feature from Universal finds a hapless group of explorers venturing into the unknown depths of the Amazon. Their arrival into uncharted territory sparks the curiosity of the mysterious creature, and the adventure soon turns tragic when the crew attempts to capture the amphibious Gill-man.

“We’re especially pleased to offer ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ as our July Friday Fright Night feature,” said Phillips Payson, operations director for the Palace who also is a filmmaker. “Not only is this one of the top classic horror films of all time, the film features luminous underwater cinematography and a tragic monster that will not only scare you, but break your heart. The titular Gill-man has gone on to earn his place as a pop culture icon and will be posing in the lobby prior to the film for a special photo opportunity with moviegoers.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Come early to pose with the Gill-man. Tag the Palace in photos on social media, @hilopalace, for a chance to win two free tickets to the next Friday Fright Night feature, “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms,” showing Aug 16.

Regular movie prices of $8.50 general admission and $7.50 for seniors and students apply.
