Police say a 53-year-old Waimea man died early Saturday morning after being run over by a pickup truck Friday night in the parking lot of Parker Ranch Center.

The victim was identified as Clinton Leimamo Pawai.

Officers responding to a 7:24 p.m. call Friday determined a 34-year old Waimea man was driving a white 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup and struck Pawai, a pedestrian who was not in a marked crosswalk.

Pawai was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, identified in a police log as Cody Malua Mahuna, wasn’t injured, but was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Mahuna was later released from custody without being charged, pending further investigation.

Police think alcohol is a factor in the collision and an autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Because the collision occurred on private property, Pawai’s death is not counted as an official fatality for statistical purposes.

A negligent homicide investigation was opened. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, ext. 229, or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
