Putts for Paws tournament

The Hawaii Island Humane Society is hosting its Putts for Paws charity golf tournament on July 6 at Makani Golf Club.

Proceeds from the tournament will help to provide services and benefit animals in need.

The tournament format is a four-person scramble, with registration at 7 a.m., and golfers tee off at 8 a.m. The $150 fee per person covers course fees and cart, two mulligans, two drink tickets, refreshments, and lunch and prizes.

Hawaii Island Humane Society will have adoptable dogs on-site to inspire low golf scores and encourage second-chance adoptions.

Ohana fishing tournament

The county will hold the 23rd annual Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament Aug. 16-18 for six divisions.

Registration must be turned into the Recreation Division office at 799 Pi’ilani Street in Hilo, or postmarked, by July 12, and forms and rules can be picked up at County Parks and Recreation facilities, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo, J. Hara Store in Kurtistown, Hawaiian Island Creations in Waimea, and the West Hawaii Civic Center in Kona, or online at www.hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation

Weigh-ins will be conducted at the Honokaa Sports Complex from noon-1:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

The divisions are:

• Keiki (ages 5-12), $30 a participant

• Teens (13-17), $30

• Adult women (18-54), $35

• Adult men (18-54), $35

• Kupuna (55 and over), $30

• Ohana/families, $25 a family

Checks can be made payable to County Director of Finance.

There will also be a barbless circle hook challenger and invasive species division, and awards will be presented for at least the seven heaviest fish in each six divisions.

Hawaii Cycling club time trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s new Hilo Climbing Training Time Trial will start at 8 a.m. July 13 at the Puainako extension of Saddle Road

The exact distance is to be determined, but registration is from 7:30- 7:50 a.m., followed by a prerace meeting, and participants will start 10 seconds apart.

The race replaces the Mauna Loa Training Time Trial, which has been canceled due to denied

After the event, HCC will provide food and hydration at the talk-story station.

Kings’ Swim on July 4

Kona Aquatics will be hosting its 25th annual Kings’ Swim on July 4 at the Kailua Pier, and late registration is still available from 6:30-7 a.m. race day at a fee of $20.

The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

No wetsuits or fins permitted; only USA swimming approved suits permitted.

Richardson swim sign-ups

Registration is ongoing for the Richardson Rough Water Swim, which be held at 8 a.m. July 28, with a 6:45 a.m. check-in.

Sign-up forms are available at all county Pools and the Hilo Recreation Office, located at Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Lu`au Hale, 799 Piilani St.

The cost is $20 per swimmer until July 15 for ages 10 and up. Late registration begins July 16 and the cost is $40 (cash only). Swimmers may also register the day of the swim but must bring exact cash only. Late registrants are not guaranteed an event T-shirt.

Kamehameha is recruiting for a tennis and swimming coach, and the deadline to apply is July 4.

Waiakea looking for coaches

Waiakea High is seeking head coaching applicants for girls soccer and softball, and applications are due Monday.

Applications may be picked up a t the school’s main office during business hours (Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Coaches hired by the Hawaii DOE are required to pass a criminal background check. For more information, call Waiakea athletic director Tom Correa at 974-4830.

Ka’u High coaches sought

Ka’u High is seeking head coaches for the following positions for the 2019-2020 school years: boys and girls:judo, boys and girls swimming, and baseball.

Application deadline is July 1. Applications may be picked up at the school office Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Coaches hired by the DOE are required to pass a criminal background check.

Hoops tourney in August

The AK Service Basketball Tournament will be held Aug. 16-18 at Panaewa gym, and eight teams are being sought for men’s open and a 35-and-older division.

The entrance fee is $250.

Vulcan Basketball Camp on tap

Registration forms are available for the Vulcan Basketball Camp with Coach Jimmy Yagi, which is set for July 22-25 for players ages 9-17.

UHH coaches GE Coleman and David Kaneshiro, along with Vulcan basketball players, local coaches and Coach Yagi will be on hand as clinicians at UHH gym and Panaewa gym. The cost is $100.

The camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. each day,depending on age group, and each camper will receive a camp t-shirt, a basketball, a team photo and lunch each day.
