Police took a 42-year-old Hawi man into custody Tuesday after a domestic incident that evolved into a standoff with police and a road closure.

Darius Keala Riveira was arrested on suspicion of first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree terroristic threatening and felony domestic abuse. He remains in custody as detectives investigate.

The 45-year-old victim, a woman, received injuries but refused medical treatment, police said.

According to police, Riveira fired a rifle during the altercation, locked himself in a room within the Hawi Road house and didn’t respond to officers.

The department deployed the Special Response Team, its SWAT unit, to the scene. The road was closed about an hour while officers negotiated with Riveira, who eventually surrendered.

Witnesses are asked to contact Detective Brandon Mansur at 326-4646, ext. 301, or brandon.mansur@hawaiicounty.gov.
