Volcano Art Center’s Hula Arts at Kilauea free performance series continues at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with a presentation by Halau Kawehileimamoikawekiu‘oKohala under the direction of kumu Lorna Kapualiko Lim. Park entrance fees might apply.

Halau Kawehileimamoikawekiu‘oKohala opened its doors three and a half years ago in beautiful Hala‘ula Kohala. The halau is based at Lim’s family home, humbly named “Hale a Ke Aloha” dedicated and blessed by her mother, the late Mary Ann Lim. There, the seeds of hula and culture were planted and the halau’s hula journey has been a blessing since.

Among their recent achievements, the halau was named as the overall winner in the 2019 Moku o Keawe International Hula Festival, and members of the halau have won awards at the Hula O Na Keiki competition on Maui.

This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the Volcano Art Center. For the series, hula halau from throughout Hawaii are invited to perform in the one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the national park. These performances are presented authentically in an outdoor setting, rain or shine, without electronic amplification. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats.

In conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performance, join kumu Moses Kaho‘oekele Crabbe on the Volcano Art Center Gallery lanai as he shares “Na Mea Hula” (“All Things Hula”). These cultural demonstrations are hands-on and family friendly and occur from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Hula Kahiko performance days.
