Virtuoso Argentine tango pianist Pablo Estigarribia, accompanied by bandoneonist Adrian Jost, will play two concerts this week on the Big Island.

The pair will play at 7 p.m. tonight at the Palace Theater in Hilo, and at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. At each concert there will be Argentine tango performances on stage during concert, and dancing is encouraged during the second half of show.

Tango finds new life when a San Francisco favorite meets world-class talent from Buenos Aires. From classics to original compositions, their collaborations bring new life into the heart of tango — tradition layered with fresh harmonies and perspectives; stories of life, love and loss articulated through the hands and minds of two great talents.

The ascent to a new pinnacle in tango music began when Estigarribia discovered tango in 2005. The classically trained virtuoso Argentine tango pianist also is an arranger and composer, with a rich jazz influence.

Upon winning a grant from the Orchestra School of Tango, under the directorship of the esteemed Emilio Balcarce, his performance career continued through nine countries and more than 150 concerts.

Jost studied music in Switzerland. He won the gold medal of the ARMA musicians at age 11, studied Bayan with Fritz Tschannen and Stephane Chapuis.

He won the 1996 Landis+Gyr contest that sent him to Chicago where he completed a Master’s degree at Northwestern University and started the transition to the iconic bandoneón.
