Police closed the Hilo Transfer Station at about 2 p.m. Thursday after an explosive device was found there.
The facility was evacuated during the closure for the safety of the staff and public.
The explosive device was found to be a non-functioning grenade, with no detonation ability.
Police said it’s unclear how the device, which was found on the roadway in front of a dumpster, ended up at the dump site.
The facility was reopened at about 2:45 p.m. after it was determined to be safe.
