HAWAII ISLAND AJA VETERANS LEGACY ASSOCIATION

The Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association offers up to two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their education this fall. The Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and perpetuating the legacy of the Americans of Japanese ancestry veterans during World War II.

Applicants must be a senior at any Hawaii Island public or private high school and must enroll full time at any accredited college or university in the state of Hawaii for the 2019-20 academic year, registering for 12 credits or more. (Online educational programs ineligible.) In addition, an essay of no more than 1,000 words is required, describing the significance and role of Americans of Japanese ancestry in the 100th Infantry Battalion, Military Intelligence Service or the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in World War II (focusing on a minimum of one) and their legacy. Scholarships to be applied to tuition, room and board, books, travel or other expenses at the college or university of the applicant’s choice.

Application forms and instructions are available at counselor offices. The deadline to apply is April 20; applications, including essay, must be postmarked by this date.

EAST HAWAII HIROSHIMA KENJIN KAI

The East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai offers up to two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their education this fall. Applicants must be a senior at any East Hawaii public or private high school and must enroll full time at any accredited college or university for the 2019-20 academic year, registering for 12 credits or more. Scholarships to be applied to tuition, room and board, books, travel or other expenses at the college or university of the applicant’s choice.

Applicant must be a child or grandchild of an East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai member in good standing).

Application forms and instructions are available at counselor offices. The deadline to apply is April 6; applications must be postmarked by this date.

BIG ISLAND PRESS CLUB

The Big Island Press Club announces the availability of scholarships for students pursuing higher education in journalism and related careers. Last year, BIPC awarded a total of $5,100 to six Hawaii Island students.

Application deadline is April 1; Applications must be postmarked by this date.

To qualify applicants must: have Big Island residential ties, demonstrate an interest in journalism or related career, be enrolled as a full-time student and show a record of academic achievement.

In the past, BIPC offered scholarships honoring past Big Island journalists and advocates. The awards include the Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, the Bill Arballo Scholarship, the Marcia Reynolds Scholarship, the Yukino Fukubori Memorial Scholarship and the Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship.

This year the Hugh Clark scholarship, honoring the late Hawaii Island journalist, also will be awarded.
