Peace Corps Day slated

The public is invited to Peace Corps Day at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Thursday (March 7).

A talk-story opportunity with returned Peace Corps volunteers is slated for 10 a.m.-noon on the library lanai. That will be followed by an informational panel with the volunteers from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Campus Center Room 306 and an application session with Peace Corps recruiter Barbara Smith from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the same room.

The event is sponsored by the UH-Hilo Career and Academic Advising Center.

For additional information, call Sarah Juan at 932-7776.

On Ensemble to perform

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center welcomes On Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (March 7).

“Established in 2002, On Ensemble is one of the most respected ensembles in the taiko world,” said PAC manager Lee Dombroski. “Led by childhood friends Shoji Kameda and Masato (Maz) Baba, On Ensemble is recognized for infusing the powerful rhythms of taiko with a wide range of musical influences from jazz and rock to central Asian overtone singing.”

On Ensemble is supported by one of Japan’s most traditional culture bearers, Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten, instrument maker to the emperor of Japan. This support empowers On Ensemble to use authentic, rare Japanese instruments in its exploration of taiko.

Tickets are reserved seating and priced at $25 general, $20 discount and $12 UH-Hilo/HawCC students (with a valid student ID) and children up to age 17 for pre-sale and $5 more for each category at the door.

Tickets are available by calling the UH-Hilo box office at 932-7490 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or ordering online at artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu.
