A discharge of about 66,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was discharged into the ocean this weekend at the county’s Kulaimano wastewater treatment plant in Pepeekeo.
According to a written statement by the county’s Wastewater Division, malfunctioning equipment used in the disinfection process caused the spill of the partially treated effluent, which occurred between 9:28 a.m. Saturday and 9:20 a.m. Sunday.
The county said the disinfection process was resumed and the plant back to normal operations as of 9:20 a.m. Sunday.
Contaminated water warning signs were posted along the Pepeekeo shoreline area between Lonokaehu Stream to Kuhuainu Triangulation Station, according to the county.
