Firefighters extinguished a brake/wheel fire in a trailer carrying 38,000 pounds of liquid nitrogen early Saturday morning.

According to a Fire Department statement, the 2:18 a.m. alarm was sounded from Silva Street, in the Keaukaha industrial area including the Port of Hilo.

Eight companies responded, with the first unit on scene at 2:24 a.m.

The fire was extinguished three minutes later and firefighters continued to cool down the tank and wheel areas of the trailer before turning it back over to the trucking companies.

No injuries or leaks were reported.

Liquid nitrogen, which is used for flash freezing, is not flammable.
