Arthur Astel Sr., 93, of Pevely, Mo., formerly of Pahoa, died Dec. 13 at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur, Mo. Born in St. Louis, he was a retired union carpenter Local #2214, U.S. Navy World War II veteran, past master of Beacon Lodge No. 3 in Hazelwood, Mo., 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, Valley of Hilo Orient of Hawaii, Eastern Star, Pomegranate Chapter and Yorkrite Council. Private services held, with interment at National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Survived by wife, Josephine Astel of Pevely; sons, Arthur (Mary) Astel of Pensacola, Fla., Matthew Astel, Mark Astel of Glenwood and Steve (Benlynne) Astel of Kurtistown; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Donald D.K. Kim, 91, of Hilo died Dec. 10 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired maintenance supervisor for Aloha Airlines and member of Tenth Hole Golf Club. Survived by sons, Steven Kim, Zeffery “Kimo” Kim, Kenneth “Moki” Kim and Ryan Kim of Kaimuki, Oahu; daughter, Donna Tsugawa of Kaimuki; sister, Betty Fo of Kaimuki; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Kemra Anne Martin, 55, of Napoopoo died Dec. 12 at home. Born in Ashland, Ore., she was photographer, midwife and world traveler. Private celebration of life at a later date. Barbara Jean (Binyan) Ueda, 74, of Hilo died Dec. 6 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired purchasing agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Visitation 4-5 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 27) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 5 p.m. Casual attire. Survived by husband, Lester Ueda of Hilo; children, Les Garon Ueda of San Antonio, Gaylynne (Robin) Rivera, Aaron (Ramona) Nagata and Guy Nagata of Kona; siblings, Lorraine Mendonca and Shirley (Ronald) Kobayashi of Hilo, Clarence (Gloria) Amador of New Mexico; sisters-in-law, Kuulani Soares of San Diego and Ruthie Binyan of Hilo; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: nieces and nephews.
