Insulting to vets
I believe Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s recent decision to withdraw retired Armed Forces veterans’ free access to the park to be wrongheaded and shameful. We owe our veterans much more than free passes to our national parks.
Given the confusion and poor management of the current Veterans Administration, this latest fillip of disrespect toward our veterans is petty and insulting.
This policy should be changed.

‘Political apathy’
Election Day has come and gone.
As a state Senate candidate, I felt that my message was not wasted, at least not for the 2,700 people who voted for me. And my message was very clear: I am giving the voters a choice!
Whether or not you took advantage of my offer does not concern me in the least. I gave you the opportunity to vote for someone besides the other person, for which I am glad I did. Consider the fact that my representative had no opposition in the general election because no one stepped up and gave the voters a choice.
A very telling narrative on today’s political apathy.
Please think about that.

Sugar-free option?
Approximately 13 percent of the people living in Hawaii have diabetes.
Our Hawaii County population is about 200,000. This means about 26,000 folks on our island are afflicted with this disease. No store in Hilo carries sugar-free ice cream. That means 26,000 folks, including me, who love ice cream get none — or should we just take a chance and gobble up a mouthful of sugar and hope for the best?
It would be nice if a grocery store in Hilo (KTA, Safeway, Sack N Save) would stock an ice cream for us.

Hilo’s kindness
Thank you to the kind person who turned in my lost purse at Target on Sunday morning (Dec. 2). I have overwhelming gratitude for your honesty and integrity.
My cash, credit cards, new glasses, telephone, etc., were all there. Thank you.
Lynne Farr recently sent a letter to the editor about the kindness in Hilo. Her letter sums it up. Hilo is the best place on Earth. My purse experience is a perfect example of that.
I am so very proud to live in this special place.
