A vehicle struck a pedestrian Wednesday night in Kailua-Kona, killing the elderly man, police say.

Police haven’t released the identity of the 70-year-old victim, who was struck by a southbound 2007 Toyota pickup truck at about 6:13 p.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway at the intersection with Manawalea Street. According to police, the man was walking on the road in the southbound lane when he was hit.

He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:47 p.m.

The driver of the Toyota pickup, a 36-year-old Kailua-Kona man, wasn’t injured.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Officer Justin Hooser at 326-4646, ext. 229. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

This is the 29th official traffic fatality this year compared to 31 at this time last year.
