Details: The Filipino community of Hawaii Island will commemorate and honor the rich history and contributions of Filipino plantation labor in Hawaii. Sakada Day commemorates the first 15 sakadas, or Filipino plantation contract laborers, to arrive in Honolulu in 1906. A total of 126,000 Filipino workers worked in Hawaii’s sugarcane plantations. “Connecting Our Past to Shape the Future” is this year’s theme. During the event, sakadas will be honored and recognized with traditional songs, dances, food, certificates and congratulatory messages.
