Laurie Tompkins’ glass art “Forever Green” won the People’s Choice Award in Wailoa Center’s September “Art by Hand: Contemporary Craft” exhibit. She also won the People’s Choice Award for the 2017 exhibit.

“As a leading art glass designer, I ambitiously pursue the edge boundaries for manipulating glass by pushing the craft beyond what is imaginable; cutting, blending, shaping glass for fusion art creations inspired by Hawaiian culture, nature, science and technology, but most importantly, what my mind can manifest into reality,” Tompkins said.

Art by Hand juror Amber Aguirre selected winners at the beginning of the month’s exhibit by, awarding first place to Honolulu fiber artist Elizabeth Kent for her entry “Tribute Jacket-Dan Foley Changed the Social Fabric,” second place to ceramic artist team Kate and Will Jacobson’s “Harmony” and third place was given to John Mydock for his pyrography colored drawing on a wood panel, “Fissure 8 Lava Pond.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to artists Cal Hashimoto, Henry Bianchini, Glorianne Garza, Elizabeth Miller, Michael and Misato Mortara, David DeGomez and Rose Adare.

Wailoa Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
