Volcano Art Center is pleased to return the Hula Arts at Kilauea programs to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in October with a Hula Kahiko performance by kumu hula Liana Lei‘ilima Aveiro with Halau Malanai at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 13).

This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by VAC. For the series, halau from throughout Hawaii are invited to perform each month in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in the national park. These performances are presented authentically, rain or shine, without electronic amplification. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats.

Halau Malanai under the direction of Aveiro is an offshoot of Halau Hula Ka No‘eau. Aveiro studied under kumu hula Michael Pili Pang for more than 20 years, graduating as a kumu hula through traditional uniki ceremony, and passage. The halau’s hula genealogy comes from master kumu hula Auntie Maiki Aiu Lake.

Halau Malanai is located at Konoho Kuahiwi in the uplands of Waimea, with haumana from age 4 to adult women. The halau’s name was given by Pang and takes it to one of its core hula auwana, “Waika.” Located in this area, Halau Malanai carries the name of the distinct breeze that is clean, cool and refreshing; a breeze that promotes love on many different levels.

Hula Arts events are free to attend, but park fees might apply.
